Hamlet Honors BL 9/18/14

Shakespeare has often been considered a "modern writer" although his plays were written during the Renaissance.  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Is the play Hamlet relevant to today's society?

I completely disagree. People seem to consider him a modern writer because of his King Tut like fame. King Tut claimed he would live on forever and technically due to the fact people still talk about him today, he is considered to still be living similar to William S. His writing is not modern in any sense and just because he is still read today does not make him one.

No I do not agree. The dialogue in Hamlet is no where close to modern.

I disagree. If majority of his plays are written in the renaissance period, he obviously is more in tune with the past rather than more modernized stories.

Shakespeare's over -all themes to all of his books can pertain to any time period and will always be. Problems in society can always be the same even if different time periods address them differently or have different views.

I do agree with this statement. Although Shakespeare's plays were made in the Renaissance, his plays are timeless and still give lessons about literature and life to this day.

I disagree. I think that the way Shakespeare writes is not even close to anything modern. He uses words that are so out of date. The reason people think he is modern writer is because his so famous that his works are taught around the world. But because his word choice is so out of date he cannot be a modern writer.

I do not agree that Shakespeare is a "modern" writer. The language he uses is not like the language we write with today.

I don't think that he is a modern writer. He is only considered to be a modern writer because is plays are still around today. All of the language he has in his writings is old world writing, also doesn't make it modern what-so-ever. I think that in some sense, Hamlet can be relevant to today's society.

I agree that Shakespeare is a "modern writer". Even though his stories are written in past times he writes about the thoughts and feelings of his characters and these thoughts and feelings can still be found in people today.

I agree. Although his dialogue is not modern whatsoever and although his writings are from the Renaissance period, his ideas of humanity and other subjects still live on today.

The situations and themes that he wrote about are still dealt with in modern times. The fact that his work is still relevant today makes him a modern writer.

我非常支持这个说法,我认为莎士比亚是一位现代作家。哈姆雷特里面的人物非常完美的诠释了人类一直都拥有的品格和特性。

Shakespeare could be considered a modern writer of his time, not because of his language, which is obviously not modern, but because of the reoccurring themes expressed in many of his pieces. Many issues brought up in Hamlet such as gender roles, madness, revenge, family, and deception are still very relevant in the modern world.

I disagree, due to the style of his writing and the way he portrays the story, yet his topic and base of his stories show through as more modern than many writers of his time.

I agree and think that the overall theme of Shakespeare's plays can be related to modern society. Although his pieces are written in old english, the lessons and ideas from his works can be used in nearly any time period.

I disagree because of some of the extensive thoughts and behaviors of some characters. Hamlet is mad and at some points it's over done for the dramatic effect of the play. However, Shakespeare's writing can be considered modern because of most of the overall themes in the play, like honesty and distrust.

Although Shakespeare's writing is not modern in any way, some of the problems in his plays have similarities to problems that people go through today.

I disagree, I believe that the conversations between the characters and the way they act around themselves are not modern.
