Hamlet

When Hamlet first sees the ghost, he questions the ghost's intent.  In your opinion, is the ghost a "spirit of health" or a "goblin damned"?

He is a goblin damned because he is seeking revenge on his brother otherwise he wouldn't have given hamlet the burden of knowing he was murdered

he could be a little bit of both. he is giving hamlet more of a reason to live and something to focus on. unfortunately this focus is revenge and murder, which is not good.

i feel e is a goblin damned due to the fact that he is only coming back to tell hamlet to revenge him and kill his uncle

I think that it is a spirit of health. It told Hamlet the truth about how his father actually died. It showed the corruption and immorality of is uncle and mother. It also is giving him the opportunity to avenge his fathers murder, which will allow him to move on and be happy once again.

This ghost is a spirit of life for Hamlet because it gives him a reason to live on even though it involves killing his uncle. Now he does not ant to commit suicide.

He is a goblin damned because he is encouraging Hamlet to right a wrong by doing another thing that is wrong. The outcome for Hamlet will probably not be good if he seeks revenge like the ghost wants him to do. Emily Sweeney

I believe that the Ghost is a goblin damned because it is trying to make Hamlet revenge his death by killing the man who murdered him - his brother

i believe he seems mostly a goblin damned only because he is asking his son to do things immoral, such as seeking revenge althought Cladius did kill him.

So far what we have seen of the ghost he appears to be good. He is telling Hamlet all the information he needs to seek revenge against Claudius. The ghost could have other motives though, that we have not yet seen which could cause Hamlet to get in to trouble later on in the play. I think it is too early to make an actual decision on whether the ghost is good or bad.

I believe that this ghost is a goblin damned because he is telling Hamlet to get revenge and kill for him. Revenge and murder will weigh heavily on Hamelt's soul and cause him to become damned as well for committing a horrible crime of moral.

This ghost is most certainly a goblin damned. This is the betrayed, revenge seeking, murdered spirit of Hamlet's father, absolutely seething with desire for revenge. He does have care for Hamlet and his former wife, however, but that is all secondary to his need for peace that comes only with the death of his brother.

I believe that the apparition is a little bit of both. Like in the play Macbeth, the witches that macbeth goes for help gives him future but they don't explain it well. therefore macbeth does not understand completely and ends up being defeated. i feel that this same act is happening with hamlet and this apparition, where it is not fully giving hamlet every detail

I think he is a goblin damned because it is telling Hamlet to take revenge on his uncle. Even though he told Hamlet not to go mad and kill his uncle he still told him to do a terrible deed.

This ghost is bringing both good and bad things to the plot of this play. The ghost is helping Hamlet to overcome the sadness of his father's death by helping him revenge him. On the other hand, it is also trying to make Hamlet commit a crime by killing his uncle which could possibly put Hamlet into an unwanted situation. The ghost does give Hamlet the advice of not letting him loose his head, but Hamlet seemed to have left this warning behind.

By hearing the news of his fathers death and need for vengeance, Hamlet is given a purpose to continue living and something to focus on. With this, one could say that the apparition represent his father's spirit. However, the ghost asks him to seek revenge and gives him the emotional damage of knowing his father was murdered. This makes him a goblin damned. Therefore, it may be a combination of the two.

I think that the ghost is a goblin do to what one can assume Hamlet will eventually do. The ghost is telling Hamlet to take revenge on Claudius, but to not lose himself. Despite this Hamlet goes on to act crazy. This leads to Polonius thinking that something is wrong with Hamlet, and may eventually be the demise of Hamlet.

I think that the ghost is a goblin damned, because he is coming back and persuading hamlet to seek revenge on Cladius to either kill him or eliminate him. I also feel that he wants to inform Hamlet everything that happened that day. He had no hesitation to tell him everything that happened like his dad getting poisoned.

I think that you could look at it either way. It is a spirit of damned because he is trying to get Hamlet to create revenge. He wants Hamlet to do wrong, since wrong was what was done. I think it is a good spirit because he is telling Hamlet the truth.

Hamlets fathers ghost is not entirely bad but not entirely good either. His father is not going out and haunting people and causing harm yet he wants Hamlet to go and kill his uncle.

I think it is a goblin damned. The ghost came to talk to Hamlet and when he found out his uncle was the one to kill his father it gave him a new reason to live. He now wants to get revenge for his father. I think that it was good for Hamlet to find this out but it is a goblin damned because this news and his plan for revenge can only lead to bad things. He is going against what the ghost said and has decided to make people think he is going mad. Now that people think he is going mad, they want to spy on him to see what he is up to and if he has a purpose to his madness. Also, he may get himself into trouble while trying to avenge his father.

I don't believe in ghosts. But I think Shakespeare wants to use the ghost as a goblin damned disguised in the form of spirit of life. He makes Hamlet comfortable by coming in the form of his father, but he wants Hamlet to murder Claudius. Based on how Hamlet is devising his plan, the result is not going to be good.

I believe that he is a spirit of health. The ghost came to Hamlet and told him about how Claudius killed his father, and without that Hamlet would not have had something to live for. - John Griffin

The ghost is a damned ghost. Not necessarily bad but damned to that existance. Therefore, the ghost is just really angry he is stuck in such a state of being. That's why he wants Hamlet to have revenge to free him.

I believe that this is an evil spirit because it seems very gloomy and it only wants to encourage hamlet for revenge. He tells hamlet that he was murdered and asks him to seek revenge on his death if it was a good spirit i feel as if it would not ask hamlet to seek revenge

i believe the ghost is a spirit of health because after the ghost had left the class noticed Hamlet immediately plotted to kill his uncle, but in a way the ghost warned him not to. The ghost is maybe teaching hamlet a very valuable lesson, bettering Hamlets spiritual health

Anonymous said...

I believe that the spirit is a spirit of health. Because the spirit came to Hamlet to tell him of his father's death, it shows the ghost's good intent. How Hamlet takes the advice is a different story.

Jillian Weaver said...

He is a goblin damned because he wants Hamlet to take revenge on his uncle. Hamlet would not be doing this if it were not for the ghost telling him too. He is asking for Hamlet to correct the uncles wrong by doing wrong himself. Revenging the death and murdering his uncle is wrong which makes the ghost a goblin damned.

I feel as though this ghost is spirit of health. I say that because this ghost came back and told Hamlet about what happened. It didn't really do anything bad to anybody.

I believe that the ghost is a goblin of the dammed. I feel that no person would so be mad at his/her murder that their spirit would refuse to die and not rest until their son extracted revenge. I believe that the spirit is not of his father at all, that it is a demon, who has ulterior motives for Hamlet. -Anthony Downey

I believe the apparition that Hamlet conversed with is a spirit of health, for he provided Hamlet with a reason to live as well as reveal the deceit that falsely acquired Hamlet's crown, causing the death of his father and denying his role as king.

I believe it is a goblin damned. A real father, especially one as close as Hamlet and his father were, wouldn't put his son in danger by having him murder someone for him.

I believe that the ghost is a goblin of damned because its telling Hamlet to accomplish a task that is a mortal sin and is leading him in the wrong direction. If it were a spirit of health it wouldn't tell him to do such a task.

Anonymous said...

This is an evil or damned ghost, because it encourages Hamlet to seek revenge. The ghost of the old king does not want anything good or even want to help anyone. He just wants someone to avenge his death so that he can be free (selfish).

It is a spirit of health because although many die in by the end of the play, including Hamlet, it sets things right. Had the spirit not visited Hamlet, he would have lived in misery and potentially would have killed himself. Also, it is the spirit of Hamlet's father, so why would it want to do him unnecessary harm?

I think that the ghost is a goblin damned because through the process we have seen so far in our reading nothing good has come out of it. It has created a lot of questions that people resort to spying to get answered. Ghosts are considered a bad sign in the beginning of the book so that only means something bad will happen because of it.

I believe that the ghost is a goblin damned, because if the ghost would have never came into the picture. Hamlet would have lived a good life and would not have to worry about his father and be at peace with what happened.

Ashley Miller said...

i think he is some of both because he told hamlet the truth about what really happened to him, and a goblin because he wants hamlet to take revenge on his brother for murdering him so he could get the throne.

Gabby Herr said...

I think that he is a Goblin damned because the reason he is not in heaven or hell is because he committed a sin in his life and now he is having Hamlet seek his revenge on Claudius.

Nathaniel DeCarlo said...

I think the ghost is a goblin dammed, mostly because the spirit was very angry. I believe this because Hamlets father was murdered and came back to earth to tell Hamlet to seek revenge on his uncle.

I think the ghost is damned because he came back and gave the task of seeking revenge to someone else. If he was not damned he would have let it go and not worried about it.

Anonymous said...

The purpose of the ghost is questionable, though through dark methods, the ghost's intent is to set the throne back to the way it should be. For Hamlet to simply kill Claudius would seem goblin damned, yet the idea of a subtle, just death, would seem spirit of health for the nation.

I think the ghost is is a "goblin damned" because he wants Hamlet to seek revenge. Although he told Hamlet not to act crazy he is. If the ghost were a "spirit of health" it would be having Hamlet doing good instead of seeking revenge.

I think that the ghost is a goblin damned. The ghost only revealed information that will make Hamlet go crazy. The ghost wants revenge and he is going to drive his own son insane trying to get it.

In my opinion the ghost appears to be evil and seeking revenge, however I believe he is a spirt of health as well because at one point he appeared to be a good king, even though that's from Hamlet's perspective. So ultimately he is a little of both.

I think the ghost represents both good and bad because the ghost told hamlet about his father but It also is trying to get him to kill his Uncle.

The ghost is a nut and just wants revenge on Hamlet's uncle. Even if his uncle did poison his father. Either way you can't bring back his father. So the ghost is a nut.
