Hamlet HBL

In Act 4, scene 5, Ophelia distributes flowers to the main characters on stage (Claudius, Laertes, Horatio, and Gertrude). The Elizabethan audience would have associated each of the flowers with some significant trait. The fennel would have represented flattery; the columbines disloyalty/forsaken love; the rue repentance and regret; the daisies infidelity/deception; and the violets faithfulness. If you were directing this scene, who would you have Ophelia give the flowers to and why? (Remember, Ophelia is still on stage so she might decide to keep some of the flowers for herself).

Ophelia should have given the violets to Horatio because he has stuck by Hamlet's side. The columbines should have kept the columbines to show that her and Hamlet had a foresaken love affair. The rue should have been given to Claudius, because he definitely is regretting killing his brother. Laertes would be given the fennel for sure.

That's all she wrote!

Ophelia would give the violets to Horatio and Laertes for always loving her and being there for her. She would give the the daises to the Queen for marrying Claudius and upsetting Hamlet. She would give the fennel to Claudius for thinking he can do whatever he wants without influencing Hamlet or other people, and she would give the rue to herself for not being able to please Hamlet and regretting decisions she has made.

I would have had Ophelia keep the Rue flowers because I think she is probably regretful about her relationship with Hamlet and how she baited him to fit into her father's and Clausius' plan. She should give Gertrude the the columbines and the daisies because of the fact that Gertrude moved on so quickly after the death of her husband onto her husband's brother. She should give Horatio the violets because he has been extremely faithful to Hamlet through the thick and thin. She should give Laertes the fennel because he acted like a hypocrite during his speech to her, and didn't take his own advice. She should give the columbines and the daisies to Claudius as well. He took his brother's love for granted and deceived the Denmark in the murder of Hamlet.

Gertrude - fennel & columbines, to tie into Gertrude's kinder nature, but her quick remarriage after her husband's death.
Claudius - rue & daisies, to tie into Claudius's deception on his murder of the king, and a call to repent for his sins.
Laertes - violets & rue, Laertes may feel some regret to leaving his father and sister for France, and having this happen to them.
Horatio - violets, out of all of the characters in the play, only Horatio followed Hamlet and backed him up in his revenge.

To Claudius i would have her give him, the columbines, fennels, and daisies. This is because of his trickery in king hamlet's death and his disloyalty toward his brother. And he is very full of himself. To Laertes she would give violets because he has remained faithful to her and their dad the whole time. To Horatio she would give violets also because he has always been faithful to Hamlet. And to Gertrude she would give columbines, daisies, and rue because of her infidelity twords king hamlet and her loss of love for him, and her regret in her hasty marriage. And Ophelia would keep a columbine because of her forsaken love of Hamlet.

The daisies should go to Clauduis because he is being disloyal to his brother and really does not love the queen. Gertrude deserves the rue because she should feel some regret about her new marriage and how it is affecting hamlet. Horatio should get the violets because he has always been faithful to everyone close to him and has never done anything wrong, he is a flower not a weed. Fennel should be for Laertes because he was always stuck up and never seemed to care about anyone but himself. Ophelia needs to keep the columbines to herself because she loved hamlet but everyone told her it wouldn't work out because he was the prince, and she went crazy over him. Bre

I would give the violets to Horatio because he has stood by Hamlet. The daisies to Claudies because he is all about deception. The columbines to Gertrude because she married King Hamlets brother. Ophelia can keep the fennel and Laertes the rue.---Shaun Robinson

Claudius:Daisies because he is lying to everyone about his brothers murder

Laeartes:Violets because he helps Ophelia by giving her advice and then wants revenge for her death.

Horatio:Violets because he is willing to help Hamlet in his quest for revenge.

Gertrude:fennel and columbines because i think she thinks because she is the queen and her husband died that they should pitty her and not accuse her of anything. she also married her husbands killer

Ophelia would give Laertes a violet because he has been faithful and protective of his sister. Claudius would get daisy and a fennel because he he is deceiving everyone by hiding the murder he committed and he is overconfident in his power. Gertrude would get a columbine because she was not loyal to her husband and remarried quickly after his death. Finally, Horatio would get a violet because he is very loyal to Hamlet and is always by his side.

I think that Ophelia would give the fennel to Claudius because he is very egotistical and full of himself. The violets would go to Horatio because throughout the play he has been the most faithful to all of the characters that he has relationships with. The columbines would go to Laertes because he could possibly regret teaming up with Claudius in the end to fight against Hamlet. Finally, the daises would be given to Gertrude because she was so deceitful to Hamlet's father and could have cheated on him with Claudius before he died

Also Gertrude would get the columbines because she is disloyal to Hamlets father by getting remarried so fast.

Fennel- Claudius, because he thinks that he is above everyone else in the play.
columbines-Ophelia, also to do with her love for Hamlet
rue- Ophelia, for her regrets that she has during the play, and her repentance with her love with Hamlet
daisies- Gertrude, for her infidelity with Hamlet's father, where she ends up with Claudius
violets- Laertes, because of his devotion to his father and Ophelia when they were killed

I would've had Ophelia give the columbines and fennel to Claudius; the daisies to Gertrude; the violets to Horatio; and the rue to Laertes, as well as keeping some of the rue for herself. The columbines and fennel would be for Claudius, because of the way he only cares about himself and his position in life. Also, because he was disloyal by murdering his brother who was king and he took his brother's wife as his own. The daisies would go to Gertrude, because of her relationship with Claudius, which started even before the death of King Hamlet. Also, she is being decepted by her now husband, because he killed her previous husband. Horatio would get the violets, because of his faithfulness to Hamlet throughout the play. Laertes would get rue because of his connection with Ophelia. Ophelia would get rue because of her regret with Hamlet and repenting.

The fennel should be given to Claudius, as he is egotistical to the point of murdering his brother and marrying his brother's wife. The columbines should be given to Ophelia, as the love she had with Hamlet was broken by him. Even though she was loyal, her relationship wasn't superb. The rue should also be given to Ophelia, as she has regret over what happened with Hamlet. The daisies should be given to Gertrude, as she betrayed the older Hamlet and married his brother. The violets should be given to both Laertes and Horatio. Laertes is loyal to the point of murdering those who hurt his family, and Horatio stays by Hamlet throughout the play and supports him.

The fennel, symbolizing flattery, would be given to Horatio. After all, at this point in the play, he and Ophelia are the only two present who deserve an ego boost. They have wronged nobody and thus have nothing to feel uneasy about. The columbines, symbolizing disloyalty, would be given to Laertes. Though loyal to avenging his father, he can be seen as betraying Ophelia because he is setting out to kill Hamlet, whom she loved. The rue would be given to Claudius. Symbolizing regret, these flowers would symbolize not the regret that Claudius has for murdering King Hamlet, but the remorse he will feel later when Hamlet eventually enacts vengeance in the name of his father. Claudius will regret putting himself in the position he is sure to soon end up in. The daisies, symbolizing infidelity, would be given to Gertrude. She married Claudius very soon after Kng Yamlet's murder, and seems to somewhat have cared more for Claudius than she ever did for her late husband. This possible scheming behavior and untruthfulness to her husband bring out her true colors. Lastly, the violets would be kept by Ophelia. She remains loyal to Hamlet even though her love is not returned by him. She remains loyal to him up until she dies, and thus it is only fitting that she receives the flowers symbolizing loyalty.
