Hamlet Question #4

In Act IV, scene vii, Claudius says, "That we would do should do when we would; for this 'would' changes and hath abatements and delays as many as there are tongues, are hands, are accidents; and then this 'should' is like a spendthrift sigh that hurts by easing." How does this quote relate to Hamet?

Hamlet procrastinates his killing of Claudius, he should have right away, but was unable to. This leads to the final scene's tragedy.

This relates to Hamlet because he is always thinking about what he should do but he procrastinates killing Claudius. In the end it only hurts Hamlet that he waited so long to get revenge.

Hamlet procrastinated killing the king which eventually leads to his downfall. He should've listened to the ghost like the rest of us...

Hamlet takes too long to kill Claudius and this quote is representative of his actions. It is similar to Hamlet's quote before he is going to fence with laertes. He basically says if something is meant to happen it will, and he has no control over it.

This relates to the story, because the quote is a perfect way of stating Hamlet's indecision. He is showing that the concepts of would and should are arbitrary, and that Hamlet's indecision results from his inability to adapt the abstract and subjective concepts in his mind to the generalized versions normally held by others.

It relates to Hamlet as the quote is talking about procrastinating which Hamlet does a lot. If Hamlet had just straight up killed Claudius in the beginning the play would had turned out differently.

I'm not entirely sure what this even means, but judging by people's comments it has something to do with Hamlet and his indecisiveness.

Because of his procrastination he did not kill Claudius, and he should have listened to the ghost and not let the plot get the better of him. This leads to the final scenes tragedy.

It relates to Hamlet because he was constantly procrastinating about killing Claudius, and didn't kill him till the very end until it was too late. If he would have killed the king sooner the tragedy would never have had to happen.

The King says this quote and it relates to Hamlet because it is a contradiction. Hamlet loves to contradict himself.

hamlet waits to kill claudius which brings his death which could have been avoided if he would have just killed claudius in the beginning of the play

The procrastinating leads to the plays tragedy and the final result is Hamlets death. The play ends with Hamlet getting his revenge but because of his indecision he gets killed too.

This relates to Hamlet because he waits and delays killing Claudius instead of acting. And because he didn't act when he could, he missed his opportunity and ended up dead at the end instead of being the next king.

There is not much to say about this quote but the obvious fact that Hamlet waited too long and his indecisiveness might be the reason he is now dead... :)

It relates because Hamlet doubts that he should kill his uncle. And he keeps procrastinating it, even though he should just do it.

Andrew Keck said...

Hamlet should have killed Claudius right away instead of procrastinating. By procrastinating, Hamlet opens up the possibility of unexpected events getting in the way of killing Claudius, which could make the deed harder.
