Hamlet Question #3 (PERIOD ONE ONLY)

Shakespeare has often been considered a "modern writer" although his plays were written during the Renaissance. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Is the play relevant to today's society?

I think that they still relate to people now as day maybe not as much they use to relate to people of shakespears time. His plays have themes that are very relatable to many generations.

I wouldn't say he is a modern writer, however the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia is more modern. The idea of ghosts influencing decisions is more renaissance.

I agree that shakespeare is a " a modern writer" bc even tho it was written way back it still brings the about the meaning of Hamlet and young people can understand what is going on.

I disagree. Not only does Shakespeare use Elizabethan dialogue, his tragedies simply do not translate to this era. What Claudius did to Denmark's government would certainly not go through in most national governments today.

i believe that Shakespeare is not modern, but instead, most modern stories and tales that are told today have been based on many ideas of his.

I agree that Shakespeare's plays relates to present day because he deals with major themes of life, but I wouldn't call him a modern author. His plays are still extremely old and aren't written in present day English.

I don't think Shakespeare is a modern writer but some of his ideas, like Hamlet and Ophelia, and Hamlet's confusion are modern.

I believe the Shakespeare is indeed a modern writer, not in terms of time, but in terms of relevance. His plays deal with issues still facing the world today because he tends to focus on human flaw/nature. He exhibited the traits and emotions of jealousy and depression and love in many of his plays. Those sorts of issues are timeless, and they will continue to plague the world.

I think that it still relates to todays society because there is killing and struggle for power in todays society just like there is in Shakespeare's writing.

I beg to disagree. While many of the techniques used by Shakespeare are still relevant in the modern world, his plays as whole have been outdated since the mid 1600's. The Middle English used in most of his plays is completely incomprehensible by today's standards. His plays contain some parts that fit with a modern world, such as revenge, but other parts are completely outdated, such as dueling for honor. Parts of his works remain relevant, but for the most part, they are outdated.

Yes the play is still relevant as people still betray people. Also revenge is a common theme today in the world. The means (the ghost swaying Hamlet) may be a little dated but people do things in the world for other unconventional reasons ex religion or pure craziness.

Yes, I do consider Shakespeare a "modern writer" because his stories can be related to many present day themes(i.e. West Side Stories)...but the language and styles he used when writing his plays are outdated and not modern.

Hamlet is considered a modern day writer because though some ideals in his story are Renaissance the sheer human emotion will relate to all humans forever

I believe that hamlet's plot is one of a modern play, however the wording is most definitely not the wording of a modern play. I think that the play would be relevant in today's society if people could understand it more clearly.

Shakespeare is a 'modern writer' because, when reading his plays and writings, you can understand the general concept he is writing about. Relationships, ghosts, family troubles, loyal friends and friends that betray you, death, and so on. They all still exist today.

I think the the plays relate to modern society but in a less dramatic way. Shakespeare's plays are relevant to all time periods but the intensity of the plays are not always accurate to today's society.

Although Shakespear's English seems to be out of this world today, he could be seen as a modern writer. This is because many of his plays show lies, corruption, and tragedy. This can reflect on many things that are going on in the world today. That is not to say things like this did not happen back then because humans are humans and were always humans and will always be humans. This means his works will always be modern.

I do not think he should be considered a "modern writer " since he writes in elizabethan dialog but his themes and most of his ideas still hold true to modern day and still influence modern day writers

The style of writing isn't modern. But the actual story line seemed similar to today's society. There is a lot of violence, hate, and love.

Even though we can relate to some of the things Shakespeare writes, I wouldn't say he's a modern writer. Mostly because of the outdated language and dialogue he uses.

Shakespeare can be considered a modern writer because, although he writes in an "old" dialect, the themes of Shakespeare's plays are lasting.
