In Act 4, scene 5, Ophelia distributes flowers to the main characters on stage (Claudius, Laertes, Horatio, and Gertrude). The Elizabethan audience would have associated each of the flowers with some significant trait. The fennel would have represented flattery; the columbines disloyalty/forsaken love; the rue repentance and regret; the daisies infidelity/deception; and the violets faithfulness. If you were directing this scene, who would you have Ophelia give the flowers to and why? (Remember, Ophelia is still on stage so she might decide to keep some of the flowers for herself).

Hi,
It's amazing!

i would have had Ophelia give hamlet the flowers of forsaken love, give Gertrude the rue, Laertes the fennel, Claudius the daisies, and keep the violets.
She would've given Horatio the violets because of his faithfulness to Hamlet, Gertrude the columbines and daisies for her betrayal of Hamlet (prince and king), Claudius the daisies because of his plotting to kill Hamlet and the murder of the king, and Laertes the fennel and the rue because he loves Ophelia but also may regret that he went to England. Ophelia, I'm sure, would keep some fennel and violets for her love of Hamlet, but also some rue for her regret of the falling out with Hamlet.
The violet would had been given to Horatio as he was loyal to Hamlet and did no wrong in the play. The rue would be given to Laertes as he probably regrets leaving for France. Also he would get the fennel as he is her brother. Claudius would had gotten the daisies as he killed his brother. Gertrude should get the columbines as she is being disloyal to her first husband by marrying his murdering brother. Ophelia would had kept a rue as she is very regretful about what happened to her and Hamlet.
If i were directing the play she would give the daisies to claudius, The violets to horatio, The columbines to Gertrude, and keep the fennels for herself.
I would give the flowers to the same people as she did. I agree with how she handed out the flowers.

She would have given Claudius columbines because he was disloyal and has forsaken his brother's family. Leartes would have been given infidelity and deception. Gertrude would be given the rue because I believe at the end she regrets marrying Claudius. Horatio would have been given the flowers which represent faithfulness because he was faithful to Hamlet. Finally,Ophelia would have kept the flowers which represent flattery.
Ophelia would give keep the columbines for herself because she loved Hamlet but had her heart broken by him. The fennel would be given to Gertrude because being the Queen and a lady, flattery would suit her well. The rues would be given to Laertes because she never took his advice about Hamlet before he died. Claudius would receive the daises because he plotted against Hamlet and killed the king, and he is full of deception. the Violets would go to Horatio because Horatio was always faithful to Hamlet and was with Hamlet till his death.
Ophelia would keep columbines for herself because her relationship with Hamlet would not work out and she has realized this ever since he murdered her brother, hence the forsaken love. She would give the rues to Laertes because she never acknowledged his advice on love and relationships while he was away in Paris. Ophelia would give the fennels to Gertrude because they are both women who have suffered a lost (Gertrude with her last husband and Ophelia with her father) and she would give the violets to Horatio because he was a faithful friend throughout the entire play. Lately, she would give the daisies to Claudius for his deception during the entire play because he hid his evil deed of murdering King Hamlet and marrying Prince Hamlet’s mother.
I think that Ophelia would have given fennel to Gertrude, because she was the queen and Ophelia respects her and would flatter her. The rue would go to Laertes, because he would regret leaving her and going away to France. The violet would go to Horatio because of how loyal he was to Hamlet and she would have given the columbines to Claudius because he was disloyal to his brother and married his brothers wife.
she would give gertrude columbines for marrying claudius, claudius the daisy for plotting to kill hamet, horatio the violets for being loyal to hamlet and keep the fennels to herself for her love towards hamlet. Lastly the rues to laertes for regretting to leave for france
She would give the rue to Laertes because he may regret being away during the death of his family. She would give the daisies to Claudius because he is very deceptive and he lied and used murder to gain power. She would give the fennel to Horatio because he was the only character who never did anything wrong and was stuck by Hamlet the whole play. She would give the columbines to Gertrude because she married her dead husbands brother after he killed the king.

If i were directing the play she would give the daisies to claudius (claudius would get these because he has shown disloyalty to the king by murddering him for the crown and his wife.), The violets to horatio (because he is faithful to Ophelia), The columbines to Gertrude (becuase she has a forsaken love with Claudius instead of her late husband) and keep the fennels for herself (because she loves hamlet). And the rue would be given to Laertes because he regrets leaving forFrance.
I would have Ophelia give Gertrude The fennel because Gertrude is the queen
The colombines would go to Laertes because that is her brother and when everything was happening when he was in france.
The daisies would go to Claudius because he is full of deception. He lied to hamlet so many times. &
The rue repentance would go to laertes
Ophelia should keep the violets for herself because she was the innocent character throughout the play. She should have given the rue to Hamlet it he was there because she missed being with him. The daisies should go to the king because he is deceiving. The Columbines should go to the queen because she was disloyal to her first husband.
Ophelia would give columbines to Gerturde because she was disloyal and married her husband's brother. The daises would go to Claudius because he made everyone believe something else. Violets would go to Horatio because he stuck by Hamlet throughout the whole play. Rue would go to Ophelia b/c she probably regrets ever liking Hamlet. Fennel would go to Laertes because he admires his dad and sister.
Hamlet- columbines
Gertrude- Rue
Laertes- fennel
Claudius- Daisies
Horatio-Violets

I think that Ophelia would give the fennel to the king, whose presence is flattering, the daisy to Laertes because she continued seeing Hamlet after he told her not to, the rue to Horatio because she feels bad for his friend Hamlet, a violet to Gertrude because she is the queen and Ophelia is faithful and finally she will keep the columbine because she is involved in a forsaken love for Hamlet.
Ophelia should give the flowers of faithfulness to Horatio for being such a good friend to Hamlet, the infidelity ones to Gertrude, the regret to Laertes, the flattery to Claudius, and the ones of forsaken love she would keep for herself.

I would have given the columbines, rue, and daisies to Gertrude, because she fits all of those characteristics. I would have given the fennel to Claudius, because he's fond of flattering himself, and I would give the violets to Horatio, because he is the most faithful person in the play.

I would have Ophelia give Laertes the rues, Claudius the columbines, Gertrude the daisies and Horatio the violets
I would give the columbines, rue and daisies to Gertrude because she fits all those categories and has been deceived by Claudius. I would give the fennels to Claudius because he is arrogant and wants all his power to himself. And I would give the violets to Horatio because he is loyal to Hamlet. I think she should also give herself a rue because she has alot of sorrow.
I would give Gertrude the columbine, Horatio the violets, Laertes the fennel and Cladius the daisies.

I would have given the flowers of faithfulness to Horatio because he was a good friend to hamlet, the flowers of infidelity to Gertrude because she was not loyal, the flowers of regret to Laertes, the flowers of flattery to Claudius, and I would have kept the flowers of forsaken love.
The fennel would go to herself.
The columbines would go to Gertrude because she betrayed her first husband by marrying his brother.
The rue to Laertes, the daisies would go to Claudius because he tries to deceive everyone.
Violets would go to Horatio because he is a very faithful friend to Hamlet.
I would have Ophelia give horatio violets, because he was so faithful to hamlet. Claudius would get the daisies for deception because he killed his brother. Laertes would get daisies as well because he is trying to deceive the people and kill hamlet. Last, the queen would get columbines because she was unfaithful to her first husband.
I believe that the columbines and daisies would be given to the queen because of her betrayal to both her son and her dead husband. The daisies would also be given to Claudius since he murdered his own brother and even planned to kill Hamlet. The violets would be given to Horatio for his faithfulness Hamlet. The rue would be kept by Ophelia and given to her brother Laertes since she regrets the relationship she has with Hamlet and Laertes may regret leaving for France. She would have given the fennel and daisies to Hamlet, since they had some sort of relationship together and then he deceived her, although it was not his intent for her to go crazy and kill herself.
The fennel would go to Ophelia. The columbines would go to Gertrude. The rue would go to Laertes. for his guilt that he secretly has.The daisies would go to Claudius and the violets would go to Horatio.
Ophelia should give Laertes the rues, Claudius the columbines, Gertrude the daisies and Horatio the violets
Claudius would be given daisies because he deceived the entire audience into thinking that he didn't steal the throne. Gertrude would be given the columbines because she married her husband's brother after he died. Horatio would be given the violets because he was faithful to Hamlet up until the very end. Laertes would take the rue because he regrets his actions throughout the play. Ophelia would take the violets and rue because she is sad about what happened to Hamlets and her relationship but was always faithful to him.
Gertrude: Columbines because she so quickly married Claudius and it makes her question whether she ever truly loved Hamlet's real father.
Claudius: Daisies because she knows how Hamlet does not like Claudius and is uncomfortable about the situation of Claudius so quickly marrying Hamlet's mother
Horatio: Violets because she knows how faithful he has been to Hamlet as a great friend.
Laertes: Fennel because she loves her brother and has a close relationship with him
Ophelia: Rue because she probably regrets falling for Hamlet when he always is upset at her and says that he does not love her.
Rue - Laertes (He should have stayed in Denmark with his family)
Violets - Horatio (Consistently remained loyal to Hamlet throughout the entire play)
Daisies - Claudius (Betrayed his own family members to keep his power)
Columbines - Gertrude (She let Claudius manipulate her into believing that her son was insane)
Fennel - Ophelia (Her innocence and ignorance towards the whole situation is admirable)

Claudius- Columbines; He wasn't being a very good brother when he killed his brother and then took his wife and his crown.
Laertes- Violets; He wanted revenge as soon as his father died and was very protective and defensive of his sister when she died.
Horatio- Rue; At the end of the story, he showed a lot of sorrow and remorse for what had happened.
Gertrude- Dasies- She married her dead husband's brother after a month of him being dead without asking Hamlet how he'd feel.
Ophelia- Fennel; She's very ditzy and does nothing but sing and talk about flowers.
I think that it should have been that Ophelia kept the violets and Gertrude the rue because of her cheating on her ex husband. Leartes would have had the fennel showing that he felt guilt for leaving his sister and Claudius would have kept the daises because of him being a weed in the play by killing his brother, cheating with Gertrude, and plotting to kill Hamlet.
Claudie would get the daisies because he's pushing up daisies now. AND he deceived everyone all the time. Laertes would receive the rue because he regrets leaving his sister and father when they eventually die. Horatio would get the violets because he remains faithful to Hamlet throughout the story. Gerdy would get the columbines because she betrays her dead husband and marries his brother. Ophelia gets the fennel because she fell for Hamlet by his charm.
She would give Claudius the columbines, the daisies to gertrude, the rue to laertes, and horatio got the violets
Claudius would get the daisies because he fooled the entire state of Denmark into thinking that he just happened to get the throne when he plotted to take it. Laertes would get the rue because he probably regrets leaving because while he was gone his father was killed. Horatio would get the violets because he was faithful to hamlet the entire time no matter what. Gertrude would get the columbines because she was disloyal to her dead husband by marrying his brother so soon. Ophelia would get the fennels because she did everything she could to be with hamlet.
i would have her give the fennel to Laertes because he has been good to her and helped her with her problems, the columbines to Gertrude cause she remarried soon after her husband was killed, daisies to Claudius because he is trying to deceive everyone into thinking he didn't kill the king, she would keep the rue because she regrets having loved Hamlet hurt her by messing with her emotions, violets to Horatio because he was always a loyal friend to Hamlet.
I believe the daisies would go to Claudius because he was disloyal to Hamlet and King Hamlet because of marrying his brother's wife and that caused disloyalty between him and Hamlet.
Rue I have given to Laertes because Laertes realizes Hamlet was never against him and that he was truly faithful to Laertes.
The fennel would have to go to Ophelia because she was always in love with Hamlet and she always had him no matter what.
I would have given Gertrude the columbines because she was disloyal to Hamlet and the prior King Hamlet as well as forsaking her love for the dead King Hamlet.
Finally I would give the violets to Horatio because he was very loyal to Hamlet and would never leave his side no matter what happened.
She would give Claudius the columbines and the daisies for his deception and disloyalty to Hamlet and his brother. She would give Gertrude the columbines for her disloyalty to her husband. She would give Laertes the daisies because of his deception towards Hamlet. She would give Horatio the violets for his loyalty to Hamlet, and she would keep violets and fennel for her self for her love towards Hamlet.
Ophelia would've given the fennel to Hamlet because he flattered her often. She would've given the columbines to Gertude because she was disloyal to her husband. The rue would have also gone to Hamlet because he feels bad about killing Pelonius. The daisies would've gone to Claudius because he was the most deceptive character of the tragedy. She would have given the violets to Horatio because he stays true to Hamlet through the entire play.
(not enough computers for us to do this separately)
Laertes would get the fennel because he is Ophelia's brother. Horatio would get the violet because he is best friends with Hamlet. I would have her give Claudius the daisies, because he killed his brother. That ties into Gertrude, she should get the columbines. This is because she married her brother-in-law and was disloyal to her original husband. Ophelia would keep the rue because she is regretful about what happened with her and Hamlet.
Fennel: I would have Ophelia give the fennel to herself because she's the one giving the flowers out and being clever about their meanings.
Columbines: The columbines would definitely go to Gertrude because she's the one who went right from one husband to another. Hamlet explains the relationship as fake because Gertrude is incapable of real love because she spent it all on Hamlet Sr.
Rue: The rue would go to Horatio because he's watching all of this unfold without much power to stop it. He probably wished he could do something about the situation and wishes he had done something about it.
Violets: The violets go to Laertes because he came back to avenge their father's death.
Daisy: The daisies would go to Claudius because he's the whole problem; he's the mastermind of lies and the true origin of everyone's troubles. He killed King Hamlet in order to get ahead.
I would have had Ophelia given Hamlet the fennel and columbines flowers. She would have gave the King the daisies. Ophelia would give the columbines also to the Queen..
Claudius would get the daisies because he fooled the entire state of Denmark into believing that he didnt kill his brother in order to steal the throne. Laertes would get the rue because he most likely regrets being gone and returning only because his father was murdered. Horatio would get the violets because he was was faithful to hamlet until the very end no matter what. Gertrude would get the columbines because she was disloyal to her dead husband and married his brother so soon. Ophelia would kee the fennels because she truly loved hamlet and she tried everything she could to be with him.
I would give the king columbines because the King was disloyal to his brother by having an affair with his wife and killing him. Daises would go to the Queen because she had an affair. Laertes and Claudius could also receive daises because they are both deceitful. Ophelia and Horatio could receive violets because they are both faithful. The rue could go to the Queen because she felt bad when Hamlet made her think of her actions. Laertes could also receive rue because he regrets going to England because he missed all of the negative thing happening in denmark.
i would give the king the combines, and the daisies to the queen, horatio the violets, and the rue to lartes and the Queen.
Ophelia would give the columbines to Gertrude for marrying Claudius after Hamlet's father died, the rue to Laertes for feeling sorry for killing Hamlet, the daisies to Claudius for setting up the scheme to spy on and kill Hamlet, the violets to Horatio for being a faithful friend, and keep the fennel for being flattered by Hamlet's affection.
I would have her give the daisies to Claudius for killing King Hamlet, the columbines to Gertrude for marrying Claudius, the fennel and violets to Horatio because he was true to Hamlet, the rue for Laertes for leaving the family to go to France.
